Math Game: How Much More

Calder inspired additive sculpture with a patriotic twist!

This week we learned about the modern American Artist Alexander Calder (1898-1976)
He is known for making mobiles with wire.
He also invented the “stabile”(a fixed sculpture with similar design elements to a mobile)
He often created his sculptures in solid red or black.
This piece titled “Flamingo” was created by Calder. It is a 53-foot tall stabile located in the Federal Plaza in front of the Kluczynski Federal Building in Chicago, Illinois

“Eagle” is an abstract sculpture by Alexander Calder. It is located at the Olympic Sculpture Park, Seattle

“La Grande Vitesse”, is a public sculpture by Calder. It is located on the large concrete plaza surrounding City Hall & the Kent County Building in Grand Rapids, Michigan
Inspired by Alexander Calder, we can created an additive sculpture out of paper!
Check out these amazing pieces of art!

Also this week we wrote cards to local veterans in honor of Veterans Day!

Guest Speakers: DAR

On Thursday we had a special presentation by two ladies from the Whiteside Station Chapter of the DAR.
We learned about what DAR is (Daughters of the American Revolution) and how they got their chapter name.

Illinois is going to be celebrating the state bicentennial soon.
(We became a state Dec. 3, 1818)
They are encouraged us to make posters that they will send to the Governor's office for this 200 year celebration.
(See Mrs. Ziegler for poster contest details!)

They read to us the book America's White Table.
As they read they had a demonstration of each of the symbols:

-a small table: to show one soldier's lonely battle against many
-white cloth: to honor a soldier's pure heart when he answers his country's call to duty
-a lemon slice and grains of salt on a plate: to show a captive soldier's bitter fate and the tears of families waiting for loved ones to return
-an empty chair: for the missing soldiers who are not here
-and many many more!

The tradition of this "Remembrance Table" started after the Vietnam War.  MIA/POWs are given tribute at these special ceremonies.
