MONSTERVILLE

There was an article about the author (Sarah Reida) who is coming to visit Gardner on Thursday in the Belleville News Democrat:

Brief Summary of the Book: "Monsterville is Jumanji meets Goonies, a fast-paced adventure where board games come alive and winning your life depends on applying monster movie rules of survival. 13-year-old film-obsessed Lissa discovers a shape-shifting monster in her woods and decides to film the greatest horror movie of all time…until her little sister is kidnapped to the monster homeland of Down Below and she needs her star’s help to rescue her."

Pictures needed...

Friday the school pictures came home.
Several students either placed orders or got a sample picture page.

If possible, can you cut out a small photo and send it in to school?
We are doing an art project that will need a little picture.

Thanks so much!

Literature Circle Meetings

Discussion Directors ask the group questions about what they read,

Word Wizards discuss vocabulary words in the reading.

Artful Artists practice creating images through the author's descriptive words.

Literary Luminaries share passages from the reading that feature special literary elements such as similes.

We have good teamwork during these meetings and have fun while reading!

Matisse - Beasts of the Sea

During Art on Fridays, we've been learning about Henri Matisse.

Fun facts about him....
  • born December 31, 1896
  • loved pure, sparkling, bright spots of color
  • worked as an assistant lawyer before becoming an artist
  • cut paper to create collages

Mrs. Ziegler saw an original by Matisse in an art museum in France!

Inspired by Matisse, we made our own "Beasts of the Sea"

If you're in our hallway ... check out all our masterpieces!

The Three Sisters

Katie Kelley came to our classroom Friday!
Ms. Kelley is the Monroe County Agriculture Literacy Coordinator.
She taught us about the importance of crops to Native Americans.
Corn, beans, and squash were sometimes called the "Three Sisters".

Corn was planted first.
When the corn started to grow, the women planted beans that grew up around the cornstalks

Later, the women planted pumpkins and other types of squash.
The vines from the plants covered the ground between the cornstalks-- helping to keep the weeds away.

To read more about this and more Native American topics - see page 59 in the social studies textbook.
Also learn more by reading the Pumpkin "Ag Mag" that she gave us!
