Math Games!

If your family is like mine, you enjoy playing games when you get together over the holidays.

AND... as you know, Mrs. Ziegler loves math!

Even before EverydayMath had it in the curriculum, I was using cards and dice practicing math skills while playing games.

In your Christmas gift is a math game booklet. This has been a tradition since I began teaching. Every class has received an original booklet made specifically for you from yours truly!

Also inside the bag are all the supplies you need to play the games!
look for....
*playing cards
*dice
*a cup to put the dice into to shake them up (because it's always more fun to put the dice into a cup and roll them Yahtzee style)
*paper and pencil to keep score
*and a few other treats! ;)

Merry Christmas!  I hope you enjoy playing the math games at home.

Classroom Christmas Celebrations

First, thank you to all who donated to the Waterloo Rotary Tree of Lights!  The money we raised will go a long way towards creating a better Christmas for the less fortunate in Monroe County!

Next Tuesday, Dec. 20, we will be watching a Christmas movie in the afternoon to celebrate how hard we have been working the last couple of weeks!
  • Students may bring their own drink and snack.
  • Students may bring a blanket and/or pillow so watching the movie will be more comfortable.

Wednesday, Dec. 21, we will be going to the Waterloo Cinema to watch “Sing” for our 2nd quarter reward party (This is a thank you to the students for making good choices for being responsible, respectful, and safe during the 1st semester.)  We will have our Christmas party in the classroom at the end of the day, where we play some games, and have fun before Christmas break.

I hope you all have a wonderful Christmas holiday and enjoy relaxing with your family and friends!  School resumes on Tuesday, January 3, 2017.

How Much Would I Weigh on the Moon?

The terms "mass" and "weight" are often interchangeable in our everyday lives, but to scientists they mean different things.

Mass is a measure of how much matter it contains
Weight is a measure of the pull of GRAVITY between you and the planet you are standing on.

In science class today (page 426) we explored this concept.

Check out this site:
http://www.exploratorium.edu/ronh/weight/

*we weigh less on the moon, because the pull of gravity on the moon is 1/6 of Earth's gravity*

Fractions

Here we are in class using the fraction pieces to find equivalent fractions.

Don't lose the paper set that you have at home!  They are super helpful not only in for homework in this chapter but also future chapters!

Christmas Cards

We made Christmas get well cards  for wounded veterans in local Vet hospitals. It's a project from 106.5 Spencer's Neighborhood.  They have a goal of getting 2000 cards.

Tree of Lights

Tree of Lights
We will be collecting money for the Waterloo Rotary Tree of Lights again this year from December 5th to December 16th.  Our goal this year is to raise $1,000.00. With each donation of $0.50 or more, you will receive a candy cane. Money collected helps assist needy families in Monroe County throughout the year and especially during the holiday season.   We will be using the trees outside the office to track our progress. The first tree will be lit up when we have over $100 in donations. The next trees will be lit when we have reached the $300, $500, $750, and $1,000 milestones. Please help us light up our forest of trees.

Gift Exchange?
In 4th grade we ask that the $3.00 to $5.00 that would have been spent on a gift exchange be donated to the Tree of Lights campaign. The donations help others right here in Monroe County to have a nice Christmas. This goes along with December’s “Caring” character trait. Thank you for helping to teach our students to be caring!

Special Delivery.... from OKLAHOMA!

My Great Uncle Joe from Norman Oklahoma has a heart of gold!

Remember earlier in the year, his Rotary Club gave every student in our class a dictionary/thesaurus?!

He personally responded to each student's thank you letter answering their questions and wishing them the best for the holidays!
He also sent us a care package of treats made in Oklahoma!

some of the things inside the box were....
*Beautiful Dream Catchers to hang in our classroom!
*Flavored Pretzels from Snider Farms Peanut Barn https://www.sniderfarmspeanutbarn.com/about-us/

A HUGE thank you to Uncle Joe (and Aunt Margaret) for their generosity and kindness.
The students LOVED the taste of Oklahoma and their personal cards/letters!
